Biggest EuroBasket Success
Searching for success will bring you all the way back to the sixties, when the Romanian national team finished fourth in the European Championships three times in a row. The "golden years" began in 1962 in France and continued through 1964 in Hungary and 1966, when the tournament was played in Romania. Though the Romanians qualified for the final round of every EuroBasket Women from 1960 to 1987, there best finish was fifth place in 1970.
Biggest EuroBasket disaster
The biggest disappointments came in the late eighties and early nineties, when the National Team fell apart and failed to qualify for four straight EuroBasket Women final

rounds. Even after 1995, Romania only qualified twice (in 2001 and 2005) for EuroBasket Women, finishing the competition in 12th place both times.
Best Individual Performance/Best Player of All-Time
With over 350 National Team selections, five national titles, seven times the top-scorer of her domestic league, six times the Most Valuable Player of Romania, Magdalena Pall Jerebie is certainly the best Romanian female player of all time. Her talent emerged at an early age as she won four straight National Championships at the junior level with her hometown club side. She was the star of the Romanian cadet team that finished fourth in the European Championships for Cadets, in Spain, in 1978 and she was one of the best players of the golden team from Cluj Napoca, which won nine national titles in 10 years in the 1980s. She took part in one of the most memorable games in Romanian club basketball history in the quarterfinals of the 1986 European Champions Cup when Cluj defeated Primigi Vicenza 76-72. After her retirement Magdalena Jerebie stayed close to basketball as a coach for top teams in the national league and also for the U20 Romanian National Team. Currently she runs a basketball school in Brasov called "Basket Club Galactica".
Scouting report
With seven members playing important roles for clubs in top European leagues and two young stars having excellent NCAA seasons, Romania has their strongest National Team in the last 40 years. Florina Pascalau (Priolo, Italy), Ildiko Vass (Leipzig Eagles, Germany) and Anne Marie Parau (Dexia Namur, Belgium), all averaged over 12 points per game in the qualifying round and are the designated stars of a young Romanian team whose average age is under 25. Florina Pascalau finished the qualifying round averaging a double-double of 13.3 points and 10.7rebounds per game while adding 2.5 steals as one of best defensive players of the team. The poor shooting from three-point range (only 29.7% in four preliminary games) is compensated by an interesting inside game but if defenses collapse into the paint that could be a problem for Romania.
Prediction
Romania has higher expectations than ever for this EuroBasket. Every player in the team firmly believes that they will advance from the group stages on their way to reaching the semi-finals. This is also the objective set by the national federation. With national league becoming stronger and stronger every year, Romanian women’s basketball is growing. EuroBasket 2007 is confirmation of that. "Romanian basketball has definitely started to move up. We've started to produce also some really good results in the junior national team which is very promising“, said Bogdan Bocaniala, National Team assistant coach in an interview with fibaeurope.com.
Likely Squad
Not many changes are likely to occur in the Romanian roster, even if some other players from the national league will try-out during the team's preparation. There is a big question mark around Diana Ciupe, a former member of national team who, at 35 years of age, won back-to-back titles in the German Bundesliga with TSV Wasserburg and was also named MVP of the Finals this year. Ciupe was Romania’s captain at EuroBasket Women in France, but she then decided to retire from the National Team. It was a decision motivated by some personal issues. Her international experience could help this young Romanian team but she has declared in a recent interview that: "the rumours regarding my return to the national team are just simple speculations“.
